When you mention Subaru to most people, they immediately think of the Outback or the Forester, forgetting that the Impreza, one of the nicer subcompacts is available as a choice

What makes the Impreza memorable to me, anyway, is the fact that it is its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system (the power shifts from wheel to wheel in proportion to the traction; it’s also a full-time system, not part-time like the “real-time” all-wheel-drive of the Honda CRV) that enhances the handling of this 170-horsepower four

The Impreza uses Subaru’s well developed 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four in all of its models, including the blown (turbocharged) 2.5 WRX Sti. The powerplant has been around forever and is even now being used by others who have licensed it from Subaru.

Practically bulletproof, the Boxer four seems to go on forever (I sold one Outback some years ago with over 200,000 miles on the clock for a nice piece of change and the owner, in acknowledging the mileage, noted it was hardly broken in)

That powerplant, coupled with the all-wheel-drive gives you a handling package that is among the best in the subcompact market. And, when you throw in mileage that averages in the 20s regularly, you have a vehicle that won’t send your credit card balances through the roof as other, bigger-engined vehicles do (true story: the other day, I gassed up just after a Suburban and that driver had dropped over $145 to fill the tank; the Impreza took a bit of money, too, but it was nowhere near that; it was more like $35)

With disc brakes all around, the Impreza’s stopping power is impressive and gives the vehicle a solid feel. I had the chance to sample a sedan and found it was a very reasonable vehicle for two people and a weekend’s worth of things as the trunk holds quite a bit – looks can be deceiving

If it sounds as if I liked the Subaru Impreza sedan – often overlooked by buyers – I did. It had more than enough space for five to ride in comfort and the driver’s seat was easy to adjust and all of the key controls were easily accessible either on the wheel, stalks at the wheel or on the center console

The Impreza’s pricing runs from about $17,900 to $20,000, depending on options that include the full array of power goodies as well as navigation and a nicely visible six-inch display and Bluetooth compatibility so it is an affordable vehicle, depending on your trade and when you are purchasing

If I were in the market right now for a sedan, I’d consider the Impreza not only because I do need the all-wheel-drive, but also because it’s comfortable to either sit in or drive and it hauls a surprising amount.
